Apple Unveils iPhone 5

By Emag Aya on 02:06

Apple on Wednesday introduced its next-generation smartphone, the iPhone 5 and the new version of its mobile operating system iOS 6, at a conference at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco.

It will sell for $ 199, with models with more memory at $ 299 and $ 399.

Most of the rumors have been confirmed by Phil Schiller, who replaced onstage Apple CEO Tim Cook regarding the characteristics of the new device.

The iPhone 5 is made of glass and aluminum. It is the thinnest and lightest iPhone with its 7.6 mm thick and 112 grams. If you compare it to the iPhone 4S, it is 18% thinner and 20% lighter.

The new iPhone is compatible with standard high-speed mobile LTE, the fastest available today. Several vendors offer this technology to their customers in Canada, Rogers, Telus, Bell, Virgin, Fido and Koodo.

It has a high-resolution Retina display (1136 x 640 pixels), like its predecessor. For cons, the diagonal of the screen has been increased for the first time to 4 inches against 3.5 inches for generations. The screen size "offers more room to work and play," said Schiller.

Stretched diagonally allows the screen of the iPhone 5 to adopt the 16:9 ratio and add a fifth row of icons on the home screen. Moreover, the applications available on the AppStore will all be compatible with the new screen size.

Since their display size does not automatically adjust it, they will not appear "stretched" or "scaled". For some applications, the display will be centered, while for others, small black stripes "subtle" place themselves on both sides of the screen.

The autonomy of the iPhone 5, touted by Apple, is attributed to the "incredible strength" of the battery. It supports, on a single charge, 8 hours of talk or navigation LTE, 10 hours Wi-Fi browsing or video playback, 40 hours of music listening and 225 hours standby.

Pre-orders and deliveries

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 starting Friday, while shipments will begin one week later, September 21, in nine countries, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. At the end of the month, 21 countries will be added to this list by the end of the year, nearly 100 countries and 240 suppliers.

The owners of iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS or New iPad, iPad 2 or iPod touch (4th generation), can get their hands on the updated iOS 6 on 19 September.

The iPhone in a few figures

Since the launch of its first release in 2007, the iPhone has sold over 243 million copies worldwide. It generates almost half of the turnover of the company.

More than 700,000 applications are available in the Apple App Store, with 250,000 dedicated to the iPad.

Apple is number two in the world of smartphones, with 16.9% market share in the second quarter, against 32.6% for South Korea's Samsung, according to estimates from IDC.
